Unown is a unique gen 2 Pokemon. Basically an alphabet letter with an eye, it doesn't evolve but has exactly 28 different forms: one for each Latin alphabet letter, one exclamation mark and one interrogation mark. Unown are quite good at composing messages, communicate with each other with electromagnetic waves and promoting the use of Hidden Power. It's said that ancient writings were carved in the shape of Unown. You can find some Unown messages in-game, especially in the second generation games while looking for fossils, even if sometimes Braille is used instead, like in gen 3.

While Unown is a really neat Pokemon, it is not fit for battling at all. It has a base stat total of 336, with the offensive stats at 72 and all the others at 48. With Levitate for only ability, Unown is immune to ground moves and most entry hazards buth as that's all it has, it can as well have no ability at all, what it has does not even help. Unown is THE Pokemon to discover Hidden Power, but that's actually its only move ever. Congratulations Unown, you are worse than Magikarp. Hidden Power has a base power of 60 and changes its type depending on the user's IV, making it unpredictable. However, with such stats and such a limited coverage, Unown is not viable at all. For this reason, this article doesn't even feature a "how to play it" section, there is just no way to play it. The best thing to do with Unown is still playing wizard and have it write a creepy message on a board to scare the opponent.

Scarf HP rock, nice^^ Yes, as Unown has only one move, a choice item does not handicap it at all, it can basically use them for free. But as the one move it has is Hidden Power, Unown is still more limited than others.
