In the moonlight n°43: Dash in the night with Noibat and Noivern
" />
Noibat is a gen 6 dragon/flying Pokemon. It doesn't seem that strong as it is, but is one not to be taken lightly. It has a base stat total of 245 which is low in LC, but it can become great when properly used. Its highest base stats are speed with 55 and special attach with 45, but on the other hand nothing is lower than 30. Noibat has decent abilities, such as Frisk, which reveals the opponent's item, Infiltrator which ignores screens, substitutes, safeguard and mist, perfect against cowardly substitute spammers. It also has access to Telepathy, which has a use in doubles or triples : it ignores damage from allies. Noibat is one of the stars in my dragon monotype team, and I'm going to explain why further.
Comparing it to its evolved form : Noivern doesn't have really high stats, except for its speed : with a base of 123 Noivern is the fastest dragon in the game (with the exception of the fake dragon Mega-Sceptile is). It also has decent bulk with 85 base HP, 80 base defende and SpD. A 97 special attack completes it, but as it remains low, Noivern often has a life orb, or even specs, since it already has great speed. The abilities remain the same. The thing about Noivern is that it's a gen 6 Pokemon, and gen 6 has given us many interesting dragons, but they had to wait until the birth of the fairy type to give us such dragons as the super bulky Goodra, the poison type dragon Dragalge or the fastest real dragon ever, Noivern. Because Pokemon logic.
How to play them ?
Noibat : LC tier. As I don't play it in LC I'm giving you a Smogon set. They suggest a life orb set with Infiltrator to bypass screens and substitute. They start their set with Tailwind to double their speed, then they unload their three attacks : Hurricane, Heat Wave, Draco Meteor. The thing with Noibat is that it's the only Pokemon (along with its evolved form of course) to learn Draco Meteor and Hurricane at the same time while giving them both STAB boost. It also has access to Heat Wave for coverage, to counter ice types. Those three attacks also give Noibat perfect neutral coverage. As it has a life orb, remember to always set its HP so it has an odd number (up to 19), to minimize life orb self-damage.
Smogon LC set :
Noibat lvl 5 @life orb
Infiltrator
Tailwind
Draco Meteor
Hurricane
Heat Wave
My personal set : I happen to play Noibat in dragon monotype, and it actually works well as a support. I give Noibat a sash and I make sure the sash is activated, by using a level 1 Noibat. Yes, level 1. I keep Infiltrator to make sure a substitute doesn't get in my way. Then, I use Noibat to make a difference. My moves are : Toxic, Taunt, Thief, Tailwind. You want to block a staller ? You have Taunt. You still have your sash ? Continue with Toxic. You're facing a sweeper ? You have it attack you, use your sash, then you can steal its life orb, leftovers or whatever with Thief, weakening the enemy. You are in a dragon vs dragon monotype battle ? Get that level 1 Noibat, and have the fastest enemy scarfer attack you so you can steal the scarf with Thief. That way, your fastest scarfer can dominate the battle. Thief Noibat has made me win countless dragon vs dragon battles, and even battles against non dragon types. Finally, if the opposing Pokemon is too fast and yet has no scarf to steal, you can use Tailwind : Noibat is beaten one turn later, and you can send your scarfer and double its speed, hopefully exceeding that of the enemy. You want to double Goodra's speed to make it a monster ? Tailwind again. Never underestimate a Noibat, my dragon team is feared in my league because of it and the combinations I make with it. NoibaTTTT is the key.
Blackwolf's NoibaTTTT (monotype)
Noibat lvl 1 @focus sash
Infiltrator
Thief
Toxic
Taunt
Tailwind
Noivern : BL2 tier, playable in UU and OU. Focus on increasing its special attack, you already have the speed. Get an item such as choice specs or life orb. Then, you need a dragon STAB, and Draco Meteor gets the job done. Go for it, you won't be stopped by a surprise Light Screen or substitute. Then, get either a flying STAB or a coverage move. If you lack fire in your team, Flamethrower helps a lot against Ferrothorn, Forretress, Scizor and ice types. Otherwise you have access to Hurricane and Air Slash. Hurricane is better for power, but not very accurate. Air Slash is better for hitting like a schoolgirl and trying to flinch the opponent to death. Pure sadism, no bravery. You can also get two of these moves. Then for the other moves you have access to Taunt just in case, Roost just in case, Switcheroo to block a staller for good if you have specs, and U-Turn to flee from the battle, because apparently searching for battles and then avoiding the fight is still a thing. Boomburst is also an option for neutral coverage.
UU fast attacker
Noivern @ choice specs / life orb
Infiltrator
Draco Meteor
Hurricane / Air Slash / Flamethrower
Flamethrower / U-Turn / Boomburst
Switcheroo (specs only) / Taunt (LO only) / Roost
While Noivern is a very fast Pokemon and can compensate its lack of power with an item to become very effective, Noibat can be a game-changing support as nobody expects it. I owe many of my dragon victories to my lvl1 Noibat, which is now feared in my league. Just remember : if you run it, always get a good defogger in your team, as bulky as Mega-Latias if necessary.

Scarfed Garchomp and dancer Dragonite ? You're cute.

Forget your speed. Forget your substitute. Forget your screens. You can't hide. You can't even run. I rule the night and you're my prey ! Only the brave can make it past me !

Nice article n_n. I like the noibat set, very creative and can easily make the opponent rage XD Tho it is only one time use but it's a good emergency button XD Tho to be honest, mostly useful in dragon vs dragon where scarf users become important and tailwind helps the most.

Yes, I think I've precised that. That set was originally made for dragon vs dragon, to counter the likes of Salamence and Garchomp. Now, I also have a scarfed Latios but who knows, someone else might have one

Yup, though the reason might not be the same. Other scarfed Latios users tell me that they run it to counter scarfed Terrakion, while I run it to counter Shell Smash Cloyster. Scarfed timid Latios outspeeds +2 jolly Cloyster by one.
