In the moonlight n°42: Natu and Xatu, the seer birds. <a href=In the moonlight n°42: Natu and Xatu, the seer birds. Natu_i10" />
Natu is a Gen 2 Pokemon, known for being only 20 cm tall, making it the second Pokemon to be that small, after Diglett. Even if we now have many Pokemon that size, and even two being 10 cm tall (Flabebe and Joltik), Natu remains one of the smallest Pokemon in existence. Yet, do not judge by the size, for Natu is stil a useful Pokemon. It is the very first psychic/flying Pokemon, and has a base stat total of 320, which is good for a LC Pokemon. Decent speed and Special attack, both having a base of 70. It also has 45 base defensive stats and 40 base HP, making it defensively average, but still good thanks to its movepool : it can be either offensive, defensive or even support.  Natu also has good abilities, such as Early Bird (when put to sleep, wakes up twice as fast), Synchronize (transfer status when affected) and Magic Bounce (bounces non-damaging moves such as Toxic, Leech Seed, Stealth Rock, Confuse Ray). While Early Bird is almost never used because Magic Bounce protects Natu from almost the entire sleep status (Relic Song and Rest are the only ones left), Synchronize can transfer a burn after a move like Scald, or even freeze if Natu got unlucky on an Ice Beam (assuming it survived). Yet, the most useful remains Magic Bounce, as a good defense against annoying stallers spamming Thunder Wave, Will-o-Wisp or a great way to prevent entry hazards.

Comparing it to its evolved form : Xatu keeps the same abilities, and goes up to a base stat total of 470, which isn't really high for a final evolution Pokemon. HP 65, Atk 75, Def 70, SpA 95, SpD 70, speed 95. Nothing much to say, Xatu merely got +25 in every stat while evolving. That seems kinda lazy to me. That also makes Xatu a mediocremon. Mediocremons is a metagame, currently not available (but I played it back in the day), where no Pokemon can have any base stat over 99. That was a way to use Pokemon that were left aside because of their low stats, and it's different from NU or PU because those tiers still have high stats Pokemon such as Wailord, Wobbuffet, Ninjask or Regirock. Some mediocremons were still strong enough though, such as Kingdra which had four base stats at 95, and two abilities that gave it a huge advantage over the other mediocremons, resulting to a ban. Back to Xatu now : with the access to screens, Calm Mind, Roost or even Wish, Xatu can enhance its average stats and become a threat.

Now another thing that makes Xatu a really neat Pokemon : it has the ability to see both the past and the future, meaning it has the answer to a lot of questions. This is the reason I chose it for n°42 : Xatu knows the meaning of life. Deal with it.

How to play them ?

In the moonlight n°42: Natu and Xatu, the seer birds. <a href=In the moonlight n°42: Natu and Xatu, the seer birds. Natu10" />

Of course I used Psychic ! You were about to step on me, look where you walk !

Natu : LC tier. I tested him last year or something but I forgot the sets I used. So I'm giving you Smogon sets instead and I'll analyse these sets. The first set is labelled as defensive : eviolite with Magic Bounce ability, it runs Psychic for STAB and Heat Wave for coverage, as well as a chance to burn. It also has Roost to go on par with its bulk, and the fourth move is either U-Turn or Thunder Wave. I'd say this set isn't defensive, rather semi-offensive or bulky attacker, since there is a coverage move, even if it's also here for the burn. The choice of U-Turn makes it a third offensive move, for four slots, making the set clearly not defensive. Yet, U-Turn isn't fully offensive either, rather something you use to actually avoid fighting. One U-Turn or Volt Switch isn't that bad, but VoltTurn abuse is what cowards do. About the whole set, I'd say it's for the lead, to take advantage of Magic Bounce and hurting the enemy until it faints, helping yourself by outlasting it with Roost. Good on that purpose, but not much of a threat.

The second set is a life orb offensive set. Still magic bounce because it outclasses both its other abilities at what they do. Psychic for the STAB, then either Heat Wave or Dazzling Gleam for coverage. The third move they give is either for healing or for priority, with the choice between Giga Drain, Roost and Sucker Punch. Still U-Turn for the last move. With the special attack Natu has, I think life orb doesn't give it enough power to keep up with an eviolite opponent, especially in LC. Even Abra has trouble, and yet it has higher special attack and can use the life orb for free. Life orb also means Natu doesn't have an eviolite and lacks bulk, it most likely won't last long. Roost remains useful thanks to Natu's speed, but I'm not even sure Natu will have time to actually use it. Now, there is also Sucker Punch as an option, which I think is bad : Natu has poor attack and with this set's weaknesses, it can't afford to give EV in attack at all, because that would be at the expense of the bulk, the speed or the special attack, and if Natu can't hit hard enough with the little bulk it has, you will just waste a slot in your team. And Sucker Punch without attack investment will not do much to an eviolite user (eviolite is one of the most common items in LC). What good is priority if it doesn't help kill, or save you ?

The third set is support. Still Magic Bounce, with light clay. Reflect and Light Screen, and you can switch out to something that needs to set up, such as Scraggy. Third move, U-Turn, I'm ok with it for that set because you're going to switch out anyway, to have the screens help your next Pokemon set up, so you can as well deal some damage with U-Turn. Fourth move, either Psychic or Wish. Wish suits more a screen set, you switch out and your Scraggy or whatever is healed, giving it even more time to set up. Psychic is not actually necessary, because you already have U-Turn. I have a rule in my teams about support/defensive sets : I always get an offensive move, because in case this is my last Pokemon left, I don't want to be stuck with four defensive moves and no way to come back. And that Natu set fits my rule : you have your screens to protect you, Wish to regain HP and U-Turn to hit, you can still come back with that if necessary. You don't need Psychic in that set, especially if you just use Natu as a support : you will most likely have a good special attacker with Psychic, such as Gastly or Abra.

I can see the futuuuure ! I saw you faint after hearing how the world ends.

Xatu : NU tier. I run it in a rather recent team, so I won't give you a Smogon set. You can still adapt the Natu sets to Xatu anyway. Just remember not to base your team on Defog if you choose Xatu for it, because Magic Bounce Xatu doesn't learn Defog. Only the gen4 Xatu can.

My personal set for Xatu is that of a bulky semi-attacker, that can work as a support as well. I have Magic Bounce of course, and leftovers because sometimes Roost won't be enough. Besides Roost, I have Calm Mind to prepare my attacks, and I complete my bulk with Reflect. Reflect can also be used to prepare a switch to a rather squishy Pokemon. My last move is (of course) offensive, and suits Xatu very well : it's Future Sight. Base power 120 and 180 with psychic STAB, it will hit two turns after being used, which gives you time to set up, or even to switch, and that may force the opponent to break a combo to avoid being hit by that. You can use Future Sight, then switch out, then use your second Pokemon to attack, that makes two hits in one turn, possibly killing an opponent despite a sash, Sturdy or a substitute. That's a combo I remember using while testing Arceus-Psychic, and it did work. I remember my Xatu beating half the opponent's team with that set, beating Ludicolo, Rotom and Bouffalant without any help, and hurting Charizard to death before finally fainting. Then my Rampardos won the battle. Never take a seer lightly.

Natu and Xatu are really neat Pokemon, useful, and not to be underestimated, yet Xatu's stats are its limits, and as it takes some turns to be comfortable it still has a hard time keeping up in higher tiers. But remember : he knows the end in advance.

By Champion Blackwolf. I do not own the pictures. This article is the original version, it wasn't translated from French like the other ones (from n°1 to 18, already published here, and from 19 to 39, still to come), I've just written it. Next original article: Noivern.

I'm almost done with the Noivern article. As a bonus, I'll also write a small article about a bad Pokemon, because I'll do them all anyway.
